‘The Night Shift’ NBC: Drew & Rick Looking To Adopt? Teasers For Luke Macfarlane’s Return [VIDEO]

The Night Shift‘s Rick Lincoln is on his way back.

Drew (Brendan Fehr) and Rick (Luke Macfarlane) tied the knot back in “Darkest Before the Dawn,” but fans have yet to see the pair settle into marital bliss. Drew’s deployment sent the medic oversees almost as soon as they signed their marriage certificate, and, now that he’s back state side, viewers are hoping to see him bring Rick back into the storyline. Thankfully, The Night Shift is more than willing to oblige.

In fact, the couple may soon make their family a little bit bigger.

“Macfarlane reprises his role for several episodes beginning Aug. 3, when Rick and Drew attempt to adopt a 14-year-old patient who has spent much of his young life in and out of foster care,” TV Line announced on Monday.

This won’t be the only time Drew takes an interest in a troubled youngster this season. Titled “All In,” episode 8 will see the doc bond with a woman’s “scared young foster daughter, the team discovers the mother has a secret.” Are these two storylines in any way connected? Fans will have to wait and see.

In the meantime, The Night Shift will bring a supersized helping of mayhem to screens this Wednesday. “Get Busy Livin'” and “Hot in the City” will air back-to-back on Jun 29, and each hour will up the drama on more than one level (see a preview below).

“A college co-ed falls from a balcony and once she is in the ER, TC (Eoin Macken) and Paul (Robert Bailey Jr.) find that her situation is even more complex,” NBC teased. “Jordan (Jill Flint) bonds with a terminal patient who teaches her some important lessons about living.”

TC, meanwhile, will have to deal with his sister-in-law as a new pharmaceutical rep creates a little (sexual) tension at San Antonio Memorial.

At 10 p.m. ET, “Hot in the City” will see tensions boil over as temperatures climb. Interpersonal relationships will be rocky heading into the episode, and a broken air conditioner will turn the team against each other.

‘The Night Shift’ takes Dr. Drew back to Afghanistan … but where’s Rick?

01/06/2016

night-shift-season-3-syd-drew-nbc

Wednesday (June 1) found the return of NBC’s sometimes wacky medical drama, “The Night Shift.” Honestly, before we continue down this road, we need to get something off our chests … we never expected the show to get this far. Color us baffled!

The episode, titled “The Times They Are A Changin’,” found T.C. (Eoin Macken) and Jordan (Jill Flint) attempting to pick up the pieces and move forward with their professional life after that whole failed proposal/miscarriage/coma debacle. Hey, that’s one way to end a season. But, at least Drew (Brendan Fehr) and Rick’s (Luke MacFarlane) proposal ended happily for everyone. Or did it? Instead of taking that job in South Carolina, Drew has found himself back in Afghanistan and there’s absolutely no mention of Rick. What exactly happened there?

When “The Night Shift” first premiered, the motorcycle doctor drama presented a lovely mix of emergency room gore, hospital hi-jinx and kooky soap opera shenanigans that it felt like the perfect summer series. With it’s unexpected Season 2 renewal, it felt like the show started actually taking itself a bit too seriously that it lost that sense of fun. Now, we’re at Season 3 and If this first episode is any sign, it feels like this new Afghanistan storyline may be the show’s strongest. It’s also, so far, the silliest.

Dr. Drew — yeah, we know — and his new doctor buddy Syd Jennings (Jennifer Beals) are presented with a 15-year-old pregnant patient who is deathly afraid of her husband. As we’ve seen in previous episodes, Drew doesn’t deal best with authority figures and is driven to do what’s morally right. This character trait rears its head against the armed military man when he storms into the operating room, demanding his wife be released.

The sound of a gunshot only alludes to some dangerous — and political, probably — hot water Drew is going to find himself in going forward. But if NBC is going to continue down this path for Season 3, it may be best to not play sinister sounding Middle Eastern music right when a gun is drawn by an Afghani citizen, no matter how evil they may be.

Also, we understand budgetary issues and all … but is it possible to find a location that feels way more Afghanistan-like? Honestly, those brief outdoor shots looked a heck of a lot more like New Mexico, which we suppose makes sense since that is where the series is filmed. Yet, if you mix that aesthetic distraction along with the clunky dialog that played out throughout these hospital scenes, it became more and more plausible that a Sharknado could simply breeze by at any time and no one would bat an eyelash.

Actually, now that we think of it, adding a tornado of ocean predators to the mix would only improve upon the formula. With NBC’s connection to the Syfy Channel, we think this crossover could totally work. Get on that, NBC. Oh, and also, where the heck is Rick!?

“The Night Shift” airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

NBC Announces Season Three Premiere Date for “The Night Shift”

01/04/2016

After season two ended almost a year ago on a massive cliffhanger, NBC’s medical drama The Night Shift finally has a premiere date for its third season. According to TVLine, the show will premiere on Wednesday June 1 at 10 p.m.

When the show first premiered in the summer of 2014, it was the number one summer show on NBC and ended up getting the show a midseason premiere for its second season in February of 2015.

The show follows the night shift staff at San Antonio Memorial Hospital as they treat patients and try to overcome their difficult pasts, as some of them served in Afghanistan and main character TC Callahan (Eoin Macken) has PTSD.

The second season ended with Drew Alister (Brendan Fehr) and Rick Lincoln (Luke MacFarlane) driving off to get married and Jordan Alexander (Jill Flint) waking up from her coma to realize she’d lost her and TC’s baby – only for him to propose to her before the screen went black.

Season three is set to feature many cast changes as Freddy Rodriquez left the show to star in CBS’ Bull, according to Deadline. There’s also been new characters that have been added to the show. According to SpoilerTV, Tanaya Beatty has joined the cast as Dr. Shannon Rivera, a new doctor that gets recruited to work at the hospital.

According to Deadline, Jennifer Beals has joined the cast in a recurring role as Dr. Syd Jennings, a doctor who works in Afghanistan with Drew.

According to Entertainment Weekly, AnnaLynne McCord has also joined the cast in a recurring role, where she’ll be playing Jessica Sanders, a pharmaceutical representative.

Some of the cast members were present for NBC’s summer panel that took place on April 1 and talked about what the upcoming season holds for the show, which cast member Robert Bailey said is “emotionally heavy” and added he’s glad the show is able to talk about what they talk about.

The show also released the first promo for the third season, where it appears that Jordan turned down TC’s proposal based on what’s shown in the promos.

Luke Macfarlane Talks “The Night Shift,” What’s The Deal With The Salvation Army? BRIEFS

24/12/2015

IN OTHER NEWS

Luke Macfarlane talks about his various TV projects, including the Hallmark movie Christmas Land, Season Two of Killjoys, his brief turn on Supergirl (“I got to catch up with Calista Flockhart,”) and his upcoming PBS potential series Mercy Street (which also stars Cameron Monaghan and Jack Falahee)

FeaturedphotoPBS_Mercy-Street_Guide_lores-640x360

“I’m super proud of this project. It’s produced by Scott-Free, [it has] wonderful writers. I play Chaplain Hopkins, who was a Union Chaplain who worked at this hospital,” he explains. “It’s essentially an Upstairs, Downstairs story of a hospital. Being a Civil War buff, I was very excited to live inside this world. It’s a fantastic cast. I think PBS is looking to find something that whets the appetite of the Downton Abbey audience, which they’ll be losing this year as the show goes off the air. I don’t know how official it is, but I understand they’d like to do one for every year of the war.”

Plus his hopes for a return to NBC’s The Night Shift.

“Also holding a place on Macfarlane’s dance card is the third season of The Night Shift. He hopes he can return to the show after Killjoys wraps in April. “Gabe [Sachs] has been really open with me. I love doing that show. I want to [give him a window] and come do something with Brendan. I’m pitching myself,” he says. “I love being part of the show. I know how frustrating it was for fans [that my availability impacted the story].”
