KILLJOYS: CREATOR MICHELLE LOVRETTA SETS THE STAGE FOR SEASON 3

27/06/2017

If Killjoys‘ first episode is any indication, Season 3 is going to kick some serious ass. And why not? Creator Michelle Lovretta and her writing team set up exactly this scenario in the Season 2 finale, as Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) announced an all-out war against Aneela.

“Boondoggie,” returning Friday at 9 p.m. ET on Space, picks up with Dutch, D’avin (Luke McFarlane) and Johnny (Aaron Ashmore) doing their part to get the showdown started with some key help from Pree (Thom Allison) and Alvis (Morgan Kelly). With guest stars like Viktoria Modesta, Tommie-Amber Pirie and Karen LeBlanc jetting into The Quad, we got Lovretta on the phone to set the stage for what promises to be one hells of a great season.

Congratulations on Season 3 of Killjoys. You’re back on Friday nights this summer and Wynonna Earp is part of the lineup on Space.
Michelle Lovretta: I’m super excited. It’s funny, having Emily as a dear friend on this journey and having her on Killjoysit’s kind of a delicious treat that we’re going to airing as sister shows, effectively, on the same night. It’s a small world in the best of ways.

When we last left the group Khlyen had died, D’avin and Fancy were trading quips, Johnny and Clara were off in Khlyen’s ship and the tree is no more. Where do we pick up on Friday night? Is it right after the events of the Season 2 finale?
It is not right after, but I would say the emotional stakes have a very clear continuity with where we left everybody. We’ve taken a little breath and allowed a little time to pass. The stakes remain what Aneela’s ultimate game plan is and assessing their best approach to turning a gang of Killjoy rebels into a valid militia force against the Hullen.

It’s always fun to train people who don’t really know how to fight how to fight.
Exactly. And these are brawlers. The thing I’ve always loved about Killjoys from the beginning is the take no sides, take no bribes. It allows you to divorce yourself from a whole lot of thorny issues in terms of whether you are on the right side or the wrong side. Now, they’re no longer given that freedom. Now they not only have to take a side but have to try to talk other people into taking a side and trying to get people who were in it for a buck to be in it for the fight. It’s an interesting challenge but, honestly, I can’t think of anybody in our world that would be better suited for it than the combination of Dutch, D’av and Johnny because they are different people with different approaches and we get to see that tragically, comically and lovingly play out this season.

But just because someone says they’re on your side doesn’t mean they really are.
Exactly. It’s true. And one of the things we’re exploring this season is that it’s about loyalties and about your self-definition. I love to live in the grey, not because I don’t there is evil and good because I do, but that it’s contextual in a lot of ways. There are people who are very good to their loved ones and those loved ones never know how savage they are. That’s sort of the complexity of what it is to be human and that’s what has sort of fascinated me about the relationship between Dutch and Khlyen. We saw that play out last year because I thought it was really important. There was an abusive, manipulative side to that relationship and it was toxic. She needed to deal with that and also deal with, in her definition, love and support and protection. That’s what makes life and relationships so complicated. This season that spreads out into her relationships with other people as well.

Is Aneela the big villain this season? Is she the focus?
There are definitely other challenges. Aneela is, I would say, the architect of many of those. She is colluding from afar at first and that gives our people time to regroup. There are other villains closer at hand at times. And we still have the structure that I love, which is a great adventure at its heart and a story that resolves itself neatly, but feeds into and broadens the greater season-long arc.

Last season you suggested Pree’s warlord history. Do you touch on that this season?
Let me just say the title of Episode 4 is “The Lion, The Witch and The Warlord.” [Laughs.] Pree fans may read into that what they will.

Thom has been so great in this role.
He is amazing and we love the secondary characters. It always feels odd in my mouth to call them secondary. While we can’t always give them a full story we always want to keep them close to hand and close to heart and I think we do that very handily this season. We have more Fancy, we have more Alvis, we have some surprise people that you may not be expecting. We have some new people as well because, frankly, that’s such a joy for us. Because I love our core three so much, one of the things that is fun to do is give them new energy to play against.

Viktoria Modesta is a guest star in Season 3 as Niko. Viktoria is an artist, singer and an amputee. What can you say about her character?
I’m super-excited about Viktoria joining us and the character of Niko. It was our opportunity to bring to life this very unique, very sexy, very glamorous aspirational character. She certainly has her sexy villain side because I find that appealing. But even within the time she is with us, we have also given her her own perspective and a credible rationalization for the things that she does. She is somebody that Johnny butts heads with in Episode 2 and I think it was possibly the first time that Viktoria had appeared on television, and she was an incredibly passionate and quick study. We wanted to make sure that the Hackmod world was legitimate and we brought in actors that believably belonged in those roles but at the same time didn’t make it a dark and unhappy place. They have a badassery to them.

Were the Hackmods something you always had in the back of your mind when you were creating Killjoys or did they evolve during production?
They came to me in Season 1. I went back, actually, and found a lot of clippings that I had gone through. People with gun legs and modifications on human bodies. It’s something I find very interesting when you’re thinking about the future and how we’re going to be hacking our own bodies. I think it’s part of our journey, as humans. And then it becomes, as a writer, what does that do to them culturally? Legally? What does that do to their rights and norms? Who are the outcasts?

What can you tell me about Karen LeBlanc’s role this season?
Can I just say how gorgeous she is? Every time I’m editing and she comes on screen I ask if I can have the footage rolled back one more time. [Laughs.] She plays an antagonist to our team. When we come back the RAC that operates as business as usual realizes a bunch of agents have gone missing when Dutch went ahead and killed the Arkyn pool. Banyon has a completely correct suspicion that Dutch and team are somehow at the heart of this and she is definitely, ‘Let’s pull back the curtain and take a poke at Dutch.’

What can fans expect when they tune in this season? What will they see?
One of the things we lay out is the complete origin story between Dutch and her connection to Aneela. You also are going to see Pree at his best and his warlord past. You are going to see Dutch and John on the day they met. You’re going to see a lot of tasty things that as, as writers, we waited for the right time for. We didn’t want to just throw them out in the first season, but have been pining to do ever since.

Killjoys airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on Space.

The “Killjoys” cast including Luke Macfarlane as D’avin Jaqobis, Hannah John-Kamen as Yalena “Yala” Yardeen aka Dutch/Aneela and Aaron Ashmore as John Andras “Johnny” Jaqobis, will have a new episode titled “Boondoggie,” which is the show’s Season 3 premiere episode. It airs on Syfy on Friday, June 30. It will feature D’avin and Dutch’s search for a special weapon. Read on to learn more about it.

Spoiler alert: This update contains more ‘Killjoys’ spoilers. Read on only if you want to know more about what happens in ‘Boondoggie.’

According to a press release from Syfy, D’avin and Dutch will be searching for a weapon that can draw out the Hullen. They will be aided by a black market dealer. Meanwhile, Johnny will receive a distress signal from Clara (Stephanie Leonidas). This will lead him to enter the Hackmods’ underground world.

‘Boondoggie’ guest stars

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) lists Morgan Kelly (Alvis Akari), Tamsen McDonough (Lucy), Thom Allison (Pree) and Sean Baek (Fancy Lee) as guest stars in this episode. They will be joined by Patrick Garrow (Turin), Atticus Mitchell (Pippin), Karen LeBlanc (Banyon Grey) and Tommie -Amber Pirie (Ollie). “Boondoggie” was directed by Stefan Pleszczynski.

‘Killjoys’ Season 3 Finale recap

The episode before “Boondoggie” was the “Killjoys” Season 3 Finale episode titled “How to Kill Friends and Influence People,” which aired on Sept. 2, 2016. It was directed by Peter Stebbings and written by Jeremy Boxen and Michelle Lovretta.

It showed a flashback of Khlyen (Rob Stewart) as a scientist who thought plasma was a super-fertilizer that can be used for growing food. Unfortunately, it woke up an ancient darkness in Aneela.

Eventually, Khlyen told the team about the plasma’s sentience. It’s called the Hullen once it bonds with a human. Khlyen was also able to develop a toxin that can kill the plasma and its source. They also must kill a unique tree. Khlyen ended up sacrificing himself to kill the tree.

It turns out Aneela is the leader of the Hullen and that they must take over the Quad to fulfill an old arrangement with the original Nine. As for Johnny, he was informed that Pawter (Sarah Power) was already dead. He also shot Delle Seyah (Mayko Nguyen). Plus, Fancy (Sean Baek) was turned back into a human.

‘Killjoys’ episodes

The episodes after “Boondoggie” are “A Skinner, Darkly” (air date: July 7), “The Hullen Have Eyes” (air date: July 14), “The Lion, the Witch & the Warlord” (air date: July 21), “Attack the Rack” (air date: July 28) and “Bug in an Elevator” (air date: Aug. 4). After these, the episodes titled “The Wolf You Feed,” “Heist, Heist Baby,” “Reckoning Ball” and “Wargasm” will air next on Syfy.

‘Killjoys’: Exclusive Clip Shows the Gang Returns Ready For a Fight

23/06/2017

Once again, “Killjoys” arrives in the nick of time.

This delightful summer series, which begins its third season June 30, completes one of my favorite 2017 programming blocks. For the next month or two, Friday nights on Syfy will consist of “Killjoys,” followed by “Dark Matter” and “Wynonna Earp.” All three are enjoyable in their own ways (check out my recent enthusiastic recommendation for all things “Earp”), and together they supply a whole lot of quip-intensive, well-crafted genre fun.

“Killjoys” tells the story of bounty hunters in a distant galaxy, and if you are my kind of person, in order to check it out, all you need to hear is this phrase: space bounty hunters.

Lucky for us, “Killjoys,” which is a co-production with Canada’s SPACE, uses that premise to create believable worlds, give shading to solid characters and nuanced relationships, and tell smart stories that touch on matters of politics, culture, co-existence, and love. As I wrote in my intro-level appreciation of the show last year, “‘Killjoys’ has flirtatious banter, a spaceship run by a tartly intelligent AI, a politically active religious order, ‘Orphan Black’-style meditations on extreme body modifications, simmering romances, a charismatic bartender, a mysterious order called ‘Level Six’ and explosions on alien worlds. Seriously, do I need to go on?”

The fizzy (and dangerous) fun continues this year, as the trio at the core of the show — John (Aaron Ashmore), Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen), and D’avin (Luke Macfarlane) — leave the sidelines and take sides as their corner of the galaxy hovers “on the brink of a bloody, multi-planetary class war,” according to the show’s press notes.

As the season gets underway, John gets an S.O.S. from the gang’s new friend, Clara, and that leads him into an underground world of tech-savvy “hackmods,” and Dutch and Davin also have to find someone to temporarily replace John on their ship, Lucy. Dutch and D’avin also persuade a shady black-market dealer to help them.

Well, persuade might be the wrong verb for what transpires in the clip below. There’s punching. So much punching.

“Killjoys” season three arrives 8 p.m. Friday, June 30 on Syfy.

19/06/2017

‘Killjoys’ is coming back to SyFy at the end of June

19/06/2017

One of the great aspects of summer for the past two years has been the fact that the SyFy Channel has run that great Canadian space opera, “Killjoys.” This year promises to be no exception, as the show returns for its third season on #June 30. The teaser trailer promises banter violence, intense heat, and unnecessary nudity as our heroes pursue the coolest job in the universe.

The coolest job in the universe

Killjoys” depicts the adventures of three outer space bounty hunters, including two hunky brothers named D’avin and Johnny and the bodacious and lethal Dutch who spend their time reclaiming people, mainly escaped criminals, and lost or stolen objects for various clients in a region of space called the Quad.

On the side, they fight, quip, and blow things up to #Save The World from a shadowy conspiracy. Officially they are supposed to be neutral and not be beholden to any government or political faction, but when evil threatens everything they love, they have a tendency to take sides regardless.

The show is part of the revival of the space opera that the SyFy Channelhas helped to foster. The revival started when the “Stargate” franchise moved from pay cable and expanded into three series and several made for television movies. The reboot of the 1970s classic “Battlestar Galactica” cast what was a light series into a darker atmosphere when the rag-tag fugitive fleet fled from the Cylon Empire. Besides “Killjoys,” Syfy is running “Dark Matter,” another Canadian import, and “The Expanse,” aninterplanetary epic on the scale of “Game of Thrones” based on a popular book series.

What is going to happen in season three?

When we last saw our intrepid heroes, they saved the world but at the cost of the lives of two friends, Pawter (a doctor, and Johnny’s girlfriend), and Khylen, Dutch’s old mentor. Season two ended with Johnny heading out for some payback for Pawter with Clara, a cyborg with a gun arm she calls Alice, and Dutch and D’avin declaring war against the conspiracy that took Khylen’s life, and the lives of almost everyone else as well. However, it looks like Dutch’s clone, Aneela, is hot on their trail. Also slated to return for more fun and action among the stars is Pree, the swishy former overlord and bar owner, Turin, the Killjoys’ boss, and perhaps Fancy Lee, a level five #Killjoy. It looks like it’s time to save the world once again, and Friday nights will be a time to stay home — away from the heat — and watch some television.

5 Reasons The New Killjoys Poster Has Us Pumped For Season 3

16/06/2017

 Returns June 30

Ahead of it’s Season 3 Space premiere on June 30, Killjoys has released some kick-ass new artwork to celebrate the launch. No surprise: it’s awesome. It features intergalactic bounty hunters Dutch, John, and D’avin along with what might prove to be the most formidable nemesis the trio’s ever taken on: Dutch’s double, Aneela.

Here’s why it’s got us psyched for the new season:

1. It looks like a poster for a Star Wars spinoff

Which is a nice coincidence (or a purposeful homage) considering that Killjoys star Hannah John-Kamen had a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. (She’ll also be starring alongside Alicia Vikander in 2018’s Tomb Raider reboot.)

2. We can stare at Aneela for as long as we like

There’s been talk about Dutch’s doppleganger since forever but we got only the briefest glimpse at her in Season 2’s ‘How To Kill Friends and Influence People’. This is our first real opportunity to look into the character’s eyes and try to figure out just how evil she is.

3. All three Killjoys, present and accounted for

Despite Johnny’s departure for unknown parts of the Quad and beyond at the end of Season 2, this poster is proof enough that he’ll be rejoining the team in the upcoming episodes.

4. So much green plasma

Johnny, Dutch, and D’avin seem to be standing in a sea of it. Does this mean we’ll get to see D’av dunked in the stuff again? Kidding. But we do want to find out how it’s connected to the fate of the Quad.

5. Lucy!

Our fave talking spaceship is back for another season of sarcasm, insubordination, and saving everyone’s butt whenever things begin to look really bad.

Far away on the fringes of the J Star System, Johnny begins a desperate hunt of his own for Clara, who is missing in the notorious Rat City. SUPERHERO ENVY AND THE JOY OF BEING OUT

31/05/2017

Luke_McFarlane
Move over, Deadpool: Luke Macfarlane wouldn’t mind playing a gay, caped crusader
By Nelson Branco

It’s Pride month—and London, Ont., native Luke Macfarlane is proud of himself for managing to be out as an actor in Hollywood and still manage to work steadily for almost a decade. Coming out in an interview with The Globe and Mail in 2008, Macfarlane wasn’t sure at the time of how news of his sexuality would impact his career—especially during that recession-plagued era.

The Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts and Julliard graduate said at the time, “I don’t know what will happen professionally.… That is the fear, but I guess I can’t really be concerned about what will happen because it’s my truth. There is this desire in L.A. to wonder who you are, and what’s been blaring for me for the last three years is how can I be most authentic to myself.”

Macfarlane first caught critics’ attention with his performance in FX’s gritty US army series Over There, which was produced by NYPD Blue/L.A. Law showrunner Steven Bochco and focused on the first tour in Iraq. Then came what was arguably his breakout role in ABC’s drama Brothers & Sisters, where he played popular Scotty Wandell, husband to Kevin Walker (played by Matthew Rhys). Since then, the former singer and songwriter has worked on Canadian series Satisfaction as well as NBC’s The Night Shift and PBS’s Mercy Street.

Today, he’s sporting armour as D’avin Jaqobis on Space’s sci-fi fantasy series Killjoys, which returns for a third season on June 30 at 8 pm. Killjoys is described as a “fast-paced space adventure about a trio of hard-living, party-loving bounty hunters working for the R.A.C. (Recovery and Apprehension Coalition).”

IN caught up with the 37-year-old hunk, who has been romantically linked to actors like Wentworth Miller, to chat about playing a gay superhero one day, whether Pride needs to reinvent itself and why he thinks Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is the world’s moral compass in these uncertain, chaotic times.

For those who haven’t watched Killjoys, what can they expect?
It takes place in an unspecified place and future. The trio of bounty hunters are played by me, Aaron Ashmore and Hannah John-Kamen. It’s an unlikely, future family drama. Aaron plays my brother and my character has a thing for his best friend, played by Hannah. It has a lot of action and comedy.

Why is there such a fascination with sci-fi and superhero content at the moment?
My cynical answer is…especially looking at the film industry today, because there’s a lot of rebooting of old narrative.… I think it’s due to studios being scared that no one will come to see a new story, so they rely on projects with pre-existing fan bases. So many of the ’80s audiences now have young families, so it’s a good time to reintroduce a proven, successful franchise to a new generation via their parent, who also gets an update to watch. One of the reasons I’m really proud of our show is because it’s original material. But my other answer is that I think people need right now to escape to a world they can create in their own imagination, given the state of everything going on today in politics.

Just about every actor and their stepmother has a superhero franchise. Would you be up for sporting some tights in your own superhero film in the future?
Omigod, of course I would. My agent would kill if I didn’t do that. Of course, you need to find the right superhero who matches the deeper aspect of your personality. So who would my superhero be? He’d probably an architecture fanatic…

One who likes dudes? Other than bisexual-leaning Deadpool, we don’t have any gay superheroes on the big screen.
That is so true. But you know what? Things are changing so rapidly so I could see it happening, for sure. I’d be down.

Your body is a machine these days. What did you do with that lovely tall and lean build we all loved? You could definitely fill out a superhero costume today.
[Laughs] Awww… I’ve always been very schizophrenic. I don’t always know what I want to do professionally. On Brothers & Sisters, it was a huge and successful TV series. I loved playing Scotty. That show probably got me the most recognition in my career. When the show was wrapping up, I remember saying, ‘Oh no. I have to move on to something new. I need to reinvent myself. I need to think about the next stage.’ So that’s when I decided to transform my body. When I was doing the Broadway play, The Normal Heart, I was working out all the time. I remember when I was backstage in between shows, the director would say, ‘Luke, you have to stop working out! You look way too healthy to play an HIV patient in the 1980s!’ I did want to do a lot of action and adventure films and TV, so that’s why Killjoys is a perfect fit for me.

What are you doing at the gym?
I train almost every single day. I usually go to the gym before work. I find it makes my day so much easier if I have already worked out. I really enjoy the rowing machine when I’m not doing weights.

How do you deal with being a sex symbol? Some in the industry worry you can’t be an authentic sex symbol and be out. Researching your career, I read a quote from a director who didn’t want to cast you as a gay character because you come off too heterosexual!
First of all, who knows what being a sex symbol is? It just means getting more attention if you look a certain way. As far as identity and how I want to be perceived, I really feel like I just want to be known for my work and that I want to keep working. The perception of being gay or straight, I don’t know, I think we’re in a new era in life where it doesn’t matter as much as it did before, but I could be totally wrong.

You came out in 2008. Had you stayed in the closet, imagine how much more difficult these past nine years would have been. Any advice you would have given yourself back then?
I would have told myself, especially when I was younger, that I should be easier on myself. I remember my first professional TV show and I wasn’t as open with everybody about myself as I could have been. Yes, it was a different time back then, but you always have to give people the autonomy to react in their own way to our own truths.

This year the Toronto Police are banned from marching or displaying any booths at this year’s Pride Toronto celebrations, after a motion from Black Lives Matter–Toronto ‘passed.’ Thoughts?
I won’t be here for Toronto’s Pride. I’m not going to say anything about the issue but I do feel like we have to be inclusive with ideas and people—and those who want to march with our community should be allowed to.

Do you think Pride needs to be reinvented? It’s more relevant
than ever in the US given this current White House administration.

I do think Pride is still relevant. Acts of gathering are still powerful, as we saw with the Women’s March. Pride and Pride parades are two very different things. There has been so much discussion about slacktivism and what we really gain from retweeting/tweeting causes, but I think the act of gathering publicly is still a very profound and powerful experience—as we’re seeing all over the world. The commercialism at Pride? Listen, I remember being at a New York Pride parade and I saw these go-go Altoid boys in red Speedos. I was like, ‘Oh, what does this have to do with Pride? And that’s a straight trainer from Equinox gym on that float!’ But I don’t know…maybe that’s how you get people out these days, with the lure of Speedos.

Do you like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau?
I think he’s a moral compass of the Western world. I can say I’m deeply proud of his commitment to immigrants and refugees. I think he’s important not only to Canada but also to the rest of the world.

Narratively, Brothers & Sisters was kind of ahead of its time, but its ratings weren’t on fire. It aired before streaming services tackled heavier material. While it could have continued a few more seasons, I consider the show a success. Do you think the show’s lifespan was cut too short?
It’s hard to tell. We did have a big cast and we had a lot of big names. It was hard to keep everyone happy. I feel particularly blessed in that role because Matthew and I got along so well. You can tell the writers liked writing for us so we always had a good storyline. I don’t think a lot of the other actors felt that way. I would have loved to have seen Scotty and Kevin go on but others felt we had told all the story we could.

Do you still see Matthew? [Sarcastically] I hear he’s doing pretty badly in his career right now…
[Laughs] No, he’s doing really well. I haven’t seen him in a while but we do exchange texts occasionally.

It must be a good time to be in Canada, as the US seems to be imploding politically.
It’s great. I got here to Toronto a couple of weeks after Christmas, but I’ll be spending the summer in L.A. It’s nice to be here because I have a lot of pride in Canada. I will say Canadians really love talking about Americans, though! I’m constantly being asked what I think about Trump. During the past two years, I’ve been flying down to Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia, to film a PBS series called Merchant Street about the Civil War—which couldn’t be a more American experience—but then I would fly back to Toronto, so I do have one foot in each country. It’s a good balance.

Are you single these days? Not sure if you want to share your romantic status.
Yeah, I’d rather not. I don’t like to talk about my personal life in interviews.

Hard-hitting question time: boxers or briefs? Or a hybrid?
[Laughs] I have to tell you I wear all types of underwear. It depends on the workout of the day.
